Life Before Krav Maga

By the time I turned 50 years of age, I’d built a successful business career but had become fat and out of shape with high sugar levels. I remember my doctor telling me at my annual physical if I didn’t change my lifestyle & start taking my health seriously, I’d be carrying a ‘pocketful of diabetes meds’ within a year and be facing a lifetime of heart attacks & strokes.

With the fear of losing my life, family & friends, I quickly changed my eating habits & began training at one of the local gyms. My health quickly started to improve but within six months, I’d become incredibly bored with the gym training routines. Since I was a kid, I had always wanted to learn a martial art so I searched the Oakville area and found a Mixed Martials Arts gym now known as Aegis MMA.

Being one of Canada’s top Mixed Martials Arts gyms, you can imagine my anxiety being an overweight, 50 year old business guy walking into the gym for the first time. The owners, though, were incredibly welcoming and began me in an introductory boxing & conditioning program. After six months, I was then introduced to an Israeli Martial Art called, Krav Maga, and since then, my life has never been the same!

Life With Krav Maga

Krav Maga, which means ‘Combat Contact’ in Hebrew, is a military self-defense and fighting system developed for the Israel Defense & Security Forces. Known for its focus on real-world violence & weapons situations, Krav Maga was derived from the street-fighting experience of its founder, Imi Lichtenfeld. The best way to describe Krav Maga is ‘Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) For The Street’ as it includes a blending of practical techniques from martials arts such as Boxing, Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu as well as defenses against attacks with weapons such as guns, knives and sticks (ie: baseball bats, crowbars, batons, etc.).  To perform effectively, there’s also a need for regular conditioning that is a combination of strength, cardio, mobility & flexibility training.

My time training in Krav Maga has been an incredible experience that’s transformed my health, endurance & confidence as well as creating new friends & allowing me the opportunity to pursue a passion that had been buried within me my whole life. I’m grateful to be able to train under Lucas Chaston, one of Canada’s leading Krav Maga and Self-Defense experts.

In the future, I look forward to sharing my self-defense experiences by teaching Krav Maga. To help develop this skill, I regularly assist Lucas Chaston in teaching private self-defense seminars.
