Family Wealth Mentorship

“A mentor is not someone who walks ahead of us to show us how they did it. A mentor walks
alongside us to show us what we can do.” – Simon Sinek

With thirty-five years of experience as both an executive and entrepreneur in the North American wealth management industry, my professional expertise is leading and mentoring individuals in the formation, operation & governance of family wealth businesses. My Full Bio.

The practice of mentorship is a timeless and universal human custom that pre-dates Ancient Greece, despite being named by the Greek poet Homer.  It’s a tradition of relational knowledge transfer, character shaping & generational continuity through the guiding & influencing of individuals.

Sustaining Family Wealth Is Challenging

The creation of family wealth takes years of dedication, sacrifice and hard work. Because of this, no family wants to be in a position where they need to create their wealth twice. Instead, they are desperately seeking the financial peace of mind that comes from knowing that their interests are being placed ahead of their professional advisors, and that their hard-earned wealth is being prudently stewarded in a manner that makes it sustainable for their lifestyle, family legacy and philanthropic aspirations.

The challenge for many affluent families, though, is that wealth is not self-perpetuating. Without establishing a clear purpose for the family money that is built upon a foundation of prudent financial values & principled family leadership, all aligned with the integration of quality advice, planning, execution & communication, effective wealth stewardship is threatened as family wealth can be eroded within 2 – 3 generations. The British proverb “Clogs to clogs in three generations”  is a global phenomenon that appears in every culture.

STEWARDSHIP OF FAMILY WEALTH IS ESSENTIAL

This is why I believe that family wealth businesses need to be structured & governed with a fiduciary mindset of placing clients’ interests first while simultaneously guiding families on how to steward the family wealth to sustain it across generations.   Prudent stewardship provides a grounded framework—one that prioritizes wisdom over risk, legacy over short-term gain, and character over consumption. It’s not just wealth management. It’s wealth leadership.

“It is required of stewards that they be found faithful.” – 1 Corinthians 4:2
